Pilates Class levels and descriptions

Here we describe the class levels we offer in our South Dublin Pilate studio.

Suitable for those with no prior or limited Pilates experience.

This programme will raise your body awareness and increase your understanding of the following basic Pilates principles;

  • breathing
  • Pelvic placement
  • Rib cage placement
  • Scapular movement
  • Neck placement

In order to aid your individual progress, you will be encouraged to practice at home a few prescribed Pilates movements in between classes. 

By the end of your first Pilates term your physical awareness is likely to have increased greatly and with enhanced flexibility and strength.

Maintenance Pilates

This is suitable for clients who have completed a previous Beginners course of Pilates.

Maintenance Pilates is suitable for clients who have gained good pain relief and symptom control from Pilates and who wish to maintain this level of control without risking a flare-up due to the more progressive exercises in the Improvers classes.

Aims of this class are to build on the basic principles of Pilates to maintain strength and flexibility and optimum symptom control.


This is suitable for clients confident with their body awareness and eager to explore more challenging Pilates exercises.

You will start to notice less rest time between exercises and an increased focus on co-ordination. We'll go through a great variety of exercises, using light equipment aids, including an introduction to more advanced techniques in preparation for the next level.

At the end of this level you can expect your Pilates to have reached a more personal significance with regards its influence on your physical wellbeing.


This is suitable for clients who are competent and accomplished in the dynamics of the Pilates system.

Intermediate Pilates exercises are used and modified to each person’s ability. Although core stability conditioning will be the underlying focus of all our Pilates movements, some weeks will be themed to challenge one specific muscle group at a time.

At this level you will experience further increases in pace, intensity and variety of movement. While understanding your own limits, you will likely be enjoying the process of pushing yourself through new challenges.


Aerobics combined with Pilates (Aerob-ilates) is a combination of aerobic activity and strengthening exercises from Pilates. The class will consist of a combination of aerobic activities followed by 30 minutes Pilates. The aim of the class is to add a cardiovascular dimension to Pilates.

Relaxation Pilates

This class is designed to help relax the mind and move the body through different Pilates exercises with a more mindful emphasis. This class is suitable for anyone who is new to Pilates or who has done Pilates before.

The class will consist of Pilates exercises as well as some meditation at the end. The aim of this 4 week course is to relax the mind while also conditioning the body.

Antenatal Pilates

You are an excited mum to be and wish to do the best you can for the health of you and your baby.

With each passing month your body will go through incredible changes. In this class you will learn how to recognise postural changes and potential muscle imbalances and safe, effective movements for avoiding pain and injury.

You will be conditioning the whole body, coordinating the upper and lower musculature with the body’s centre for improved strength, flexibility, posture and coordination. There will be a focus on pelvic floor muscle activation which is essential in every pregnant woman’s ante natal regime. Relaxation and breathing exercises are incorporated at the end of the class offering a peaceful close to a rejuvenating exercise session.  

Pilates during pregnancy is usually commenced after the 12th week of pregnancy. Prior to this, it can be done with the written consent of your Medical Doctor looking after your ante –natal care.

Post-natal Pilates

Anyone interested in Post Natal Pilates, we advise a 60 minute one-to-one session with one of our Pilates Instructors prior to joining a Beginners or a Maintenance class. Please call reception to make an appointment: 01 283 4303.
